How to set a fundraising goal (and why it matters)

Find a fundraising goal that meets your needs and pushes you a bit further.

How much do you want to raise? Your answer greatly affects your fundraiser's success!

You might think you want to set your fundraising goal as high as possible — after all, more is better, right? But before you launch a fundraiser with the biggest number, think about how the right fundraising goal influences your success.

Too big = Impossible to reach

We want you to dream big! But when you set a fundraising goal much higher than what you need, you run the risk of discouraging your team.

For example, if you usually raise $10,000 for the season and suddenly push your team to raise $50,000, it might feel too challenging to attain. When your team feels it's impossible, many might think, "Why bother?"

Too small = Limiting your potential

On the other hand, a small goal might feel very attainable and worth chasing. If you need $500, maybe that's all you ask for.

A too-small goal can also discourage your team from trying. You'll hit it quickly — and then, again, "Why bother?" If you don't push your team enough, you miss out on ways to grow.

What's a good goal?

Too big, too small...so what's just right? A strong fundraising goal should:

  1. Cover your specific funding needs after accounting for any costs
  2. Include a "stretch goal" about 25% beyond your basic needs
  3. Represent a number close to previous fundraisers but high enough to encourage hard work

For example, you've raised $7,000 each of the past two years for new team equipment. It's time to raise again, so you set your goal ahead of running a fundraiser:

  • Start at $7,000.
  • Most product fundraisers take at least 50% of your total. FunditForward gives you 70% of what you raise, so your goal moves to $10,000.
  • Maybe you want a nicer set of equipment? Stretch your goal by 25% to $12,500.

Even if you fall just a little short, you motivate your team to reach higher and achieve more. That's a win!
